WHAT I WATCHED ONLINE BETWEEN FOURTH QUARTER OF 2019

What I watched online between October and December of 2019. Still not well enough as my health is bad. So this is what I watched and loved on Netflix, Amazon, and any UK channel. I am still obsessed with Asia tv dramas, mostly from South Korea and China. I am fed up with the news regarding Brexit. So tried to avoid everything online about this.

Netflix

I started with a show called Healer. I had added to my list long before getting around to watching this and I loved it. A decades-old incident involving a group of five friends who ran an illegal pro-democracy broadcasting station during the Fifth Republic in South Korea brings together three different people—an illegal “night courier” with the code name “Healer” who possesses top-notch fighting skills, a reporter from a second-rate tabloid news website, and a famous journalist at a major broadcast station. In trying to uncover the truth from that 1992 incident, they grow into real, honest reporters, while dealing with the conflict between truth and fate. I am not going to spoil this but for me was so enjoyable. And I would recommend this.

As I enjoyed the lead actors performance I looked for anything else that he starred in. Firstly I found Suspicious Partner. The series is about Noh Ji-wook, a prosecutor, and Eun Bong-hee, a prosecutor trainee, and how they work together on a mysterious case involving a sly psychopath murderer. They find out how deeply connected they are by their past. Twenty episodes, that again, I really enjoyed. And would recommend.

The last one for the time being from the actor was K2. Kim Je-ha is a former mercenary soldier for the PMC Blackstone. While in Iraq, he gets framed for the murder of his lover Raniya, a civilian. As a result, he runs away and becomes a fugitive. He returns to South Korea and by chance, gets offered to work as a bodyguard by Choi Yoo-jin, the owner of JSS Security Company and wife of the presidential candidate, Jang Se-joon. He accepts the job in exchange for resources that he needs in order to get his revenge on another presidential candidate, Park Kwan-soo, who previously ordered the killing of his lover. In the meantime, Je-ha gets assigned to guard Go An-na, the hidden daughter of Jang Se-joon, whose life is always threatened because of Yoo-jin, her stepmother. An-na, who has been reclused and lonely all her life, starts relying on Je-ha, who shows concern for her and protects her at all costs. They slowly fall in love with each other, which makes Je-ha torn between having to work with his ally, Yoo-jin, in order to get his revenge and protecting his new-found love, An-na, against his own ally. The male lead Ji Chang-wook, due to his casting, became the highest-paid actor for a tvN drama. He had special training and performed the action stunts in the drama by himself, without a body double. I will continue to follow him and see what else he works on.

Tunnel was next on my list. This was again due to the actor Choi Jin-hyuk who I have seen in a few other shows that I have enjoyed.  In 1986, Detective Park Gwang-Ho desperately tries to catch a serial killer. He chases after the serial killer and goes through a tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel, Detective Park Gwang-Ho finds himself in the year 2017.

Tune in for love was recommend to me, I was in the doctors when my phone pinged at me from Netflix. This has another favourite actor from South Korea, Jung Hae-in This was a two hour film. In 1997 during the IMF crisis, two people meet while exchanging stories on a radio program. They fall in love, but can’t quite seem to get the timing right.

The Crown season 3 came out in November. This show traces the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 through to the present day.Season three covers the time period between 1964 and 1977, beginning with Harold Wilson’s election as Prime Minister and ending with the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Events depicted include the unmasking of the Queen’s art adviser Sir Anthony Blunt as a Soviet spy, Wilson’s time as Prime Minister, the Aberfan disaster, the Apollo 11 moon landing, the 1969 Investiture of Prince Charles, the decolonisation of Africa and the Caribbean, the death and state funeral of Winston Churchill, and Princess Margaret’s eight-year affair with baronet and gardening expert Roddy Llewellyn that leads to the Princess’s divorce from Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1978.  The third season also introduces Camilla Shand and Lady Diana Spencer, who will be more prominent in the fourth season.

Then one evening bored with all the election rubbish. I watched the movie. Let It Snow. A snowstorm hits a small mid western town on Christmas Eve, bringing together a group of high school students. They soon find their friendships and love lives colliding, and and Christmas morning, nothing will be the same. But I got so bored literately twenty minuites into this, I turned it off and never finished it.

Then Don’t F**k With Cats. The limited series follow a group of internet sleuths who launched a manhunt for Luka Magnotta, after he gained international notoriety in 2010 for sharing a video online of himself killing two kittens. The Canadian was later convicted for murdering Chinese international student Lin Jun in grisly circumstances. This was so good. I love cats and if I known about these videos, I would have joined the hunt. What I liked is this again, showed how much information we share online.

Then I found season 2 of High Seas. Following the death of their father, sisters Eva and Carolina Villanueva travel on a luxury cruise ship, Barbara de Braganza (formerly Covadonga) from Spain to Brazil in the late 1940s. They become embroiled in investigating mysterious deaths that occur at sea. This to me is like a Spanish soap opera and it is only eight episodes. I finished this in a couple of days. I will be watching the third season being filmed and the possible fourth season if it gets ordered.

I found the film Five Feet Apart. This was a lovely film that I really enjoyed. Seventeen year old Stella spends most of her time in the hospital as a cystic fibrosis patient. Her life is full of routines, boundaries and self-control, all of which get put to the test when she meets Will, an impossibly charming teen who has the same illness. There’s an instant flirtation, though restrictions dictate that they must maintain a safe distance between them. As their connection intensifies, so does the temptation to throw the rules out the window and embrace that attraction.

You season 2, I had read the book and had a good idea of where the story would go. In the second season, Joe Goldberg moves from New York to Los Angeles to escape his past, and starts over with a new identity. When he meets avid chef Love Quinn, Joe begins falling into his old patterns of obsession and violence. As Joe attempts to forge a new love, he strives to make his relationship with Love succeed at all costs, to avoid the fate of his past romantic endeavors. Most of the episodes are okay. But I felt let down by the ending.

The Americas with Simon Reeve was not to be missed. In his most ambitious journey yet, and spread over two series, Simon will travel The Americas through the vast and varied landscape of the two continents which, together, make up a quarter of the Earth’s land space. Simon will journey from Alaska to Argentina, from the top to the toe. The first series of The Americas with Simon Reeve sees him traveling down through North America, from the icy wilderness of Alaska to the tropical heat of Costa Rica.

Channel 4

The End of the F***ing World season two was on early November. I binged them all over three days online. This season of eight episodes focused solely on the new character of Bonnie, a psychopath hunting down protagonists Alyssa and James to avenge the death of her creepy boyfriend. Who was killed in the last series.

What I watched online this time, was again quite varied. But my health problems put me off a lot of things. So I did not watch everything that I wanted too. The beauty of Netflix. I can always watch it another time. But with the BBC I player they only hold things online for three months. Unless that changes I will have to keep my eye on this.  I just prefer to watch things online as I can do this upstairs while in pain in bed. That is the reason of my rheumatoid arthritis.
