We booked a day trip on the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway and a return ride on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. The one-way train ride is approximately one and a half hours. You listen to the history of the region from the onboard commentary, but really you are admire the views of the landscape that includes mountains, waterfalls and the rainforest.
You pass through Barron Gorge National Park, stopping for a photo-op at the gorge, and cross Stoney Creek Bridge. Then you reach the Kuranda train station.
We spent some time exploring the rainforest.
Before joining the Skyrail back to Cairns. We were lucky that we had the gondola to ourselves. The seven and a half kilometer Skyrail has two stops along the way where you can hop out and explore this amazing environment from the forest floor on board walks, scenic look-outs and in the state-of-the-art Rainforest Interpretation Centre. From what I can remember and what I wrote, is that during the journey high above the rainforest, my husband keep moving about trying to photograph everything – this made the gondola shake. Not a pleasant feeling at all !
This was such an enjoyable day and something that I would recommend for anyone visiting Cairns.
