LONDON, MY EVENING AT ST PANCRAS CLOCK TOWER

Clock Tower

If you have read any of my previous posts, you would know that I am in love with this hotel. So while researching http://open-city.org.uk/ – I can across an entry for an evening with the owner of the St Pancras Clock Tower Apartment. I literally booked this as soon as I possibly could ! I have to say that the event was well organised. I enjoyed it so much and I may even stay there.

The Clock Tower is the apartment underneath the clock at St Pancras International station. The Clock Tower is surmounted by a spire at the base of which lies the apartment, with the Tower Clock room beneath the clock with 10m high living area. The building resembles a a gothic cathedral, but the bell chamber was a folly designed by George Gilbert Scott. There was never any purpose to it, the hotel clock never had any bells. The apartment, is frequently rented out for parties, weddings, photo shoots and overnight stays. It’s easy to see the appeal: the space makes full use of the original beams and Scott’s stonework and brickwork, brought down from the Midlands by the Midland Railway company.

Living in a Grade I-listed building can, however, have its drawbacks. “The belfry is very cold in winter. The first thing I did was put in secondary glazing. But even so, it’s difficult to make it warm.”
